Now they have the love of the Spirit, and Paul prays “that you would be filled with the knowledge of His will.” Not just a trace element, not just a smidgen of God’s will, but filled with the will of the Lord. And you know what? You’re going to be a mighty powerful prayer warrior if you’re filled with the knowledge of God’s will, because Jesus said in John 14:14 “If you ask anything in My name, I will do it.” If you’re filled with the knowledge of God’s will, you’re going to be praying in the name of the Lord. God’s going to be working mightily in and through your prayer life.
Paul says “be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom,” - not your will, but His will. Wisdom, of course, is the proper use of knowledge and spiritual understanding. In other words, the inner working of God’s Spirit, the way that God would work, the dynamics of fellowship, and the spiritual battle that you’re in the midst of, and so on.
How does this happen? Psalm 119:105 tells us “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” The word of the Lord allows us to navigate these things, and then He says “that you may walk worthy of the Lord.” Certainly, to walk worthy of the Lord you have to be obedient to the Lord; and we have Jesus as our greatest example. Jesus tells us in John 13:15 “For I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you.” Remember, He served: He washed feet, He ministered, and He spent time with the people.
When you’re following the Lord, don’t complicate things. The reason I say this is because if we love God with all of our heart, soul, and mind we will love our neighbor as our self. The things that the Lord allows us to do, it’s not going to be confusing. If you feel like the things that you’re trying to figure out for the Lord are confusing, then that’s not of the Lord. When the Lord directs you to do something, you’re going to be clear of what it is. But the devil wants to complicate things. He’s the author of confusion.
So, do those that are fully pleasing to God, “being fruitful in every good work.” We’ve been created in Christ Jesus unto good works. In Ephesians 2:10 it says “For we are His workmanship [poema in the Greek], created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.” The Lord already has a plan and a purpose for your life; so be fruitful in those things, increasing in the knowledge of God, and growing in godliness.
In Ephesians 4:14, Paul writes “That we should no longer be children [we should no longer be toddlers. There’s a good one!], tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men in the cunning craftiness of deceitful plotting, but speaking the truth in love, may grow up in all things into Him who is the head – Christ.” There’s nobody who can skip the growing process, but some may advance quicker than others. We all grow in different ways. That’s not the issue. The issue is: are we growing?
